A Drop-In Center with a Focus on the Arts 9Muses Art Center is a project designed to provide those with mental illness the opportunity for expression and recovery through the arts. In addition to fine arts classes (drawing, acrylics, watercolor,charcoal, pastels, etc.) there are lessons in guitar, piano, percussion and voice. Classes in poetry, creative writing, drama, dance, clay, ceramics, potter’s wheel, hand building, jewelry making, woodworking, computers, as well as outings social events, recovery workshops and self-help support groups. Artistic expression and community integration at 9Muses promotes understanding and acceptance both for those with illness and for those without. Together our members make a difference, challenging stigma, embracing expression, creating opportunity via the arts.

All of our trained artisans work closely with you to choose the elements that will make your vision a beautiful finished piece. We carry a large selection of molding samples from a variety of companies. We also carry a full line of acid-free mats from Crescent. A 20% discount is offered to 9Muses & MHA membership.
Project Vision: The Visiting Artist project at 9Muses Art Center provides a supportive environment for member artist in a variety of art forms within a collective art setting. The program(s) provide unique educational opportunities for volunteers and our membership in process of creating.
Project Goals: 1. To enhance the range and value of the creative services 9Muses Art Center provides community members. 2. To provide support of member artists who wish to share their vision/experience with the community in a specific manner. 3. To stimulate public participation in artistic process in order to build appreciation for the value 9Muses provides. 4. Provide residencies to local visiting artists who create new works of art and expand annual curriculums at 9Muses. 5. Introduction of new programs and expanded audience.
Objectives of the Visiting Artists Project: 1. To provide our membership with a dynamic artist-in-residence reflecting multiple disciplines in the arts. 2. To enrich our members’ interaction with artists and artwork they would not otherwise experience; 3. To encourage new member participation in the arts at 9Muses, and to support member artists who act as ambassadors for MHA in the community.
Project Description: By providing a structure for the relationship between the working artist and participating members of 9Muses, the Visiting Artist-in-Residence program is designed to further enhance the variety and quality of the creative services that 9Muses offers and to and to support local artists who wish to share their vision and creative process with our participating members.
Eligibility: Local Artists/Students who create original works, artists must be the originator of artwork s/he creates, rather than an interpreter of works previously created; for example, a playwright as opposed to an actor, visual artist as opposed to a curator.
Review Criteria: Review Panel - applications are reviewed by a panel of members, and non-voting representatives from the staff and/or 9Muses Advisory Committee. The panelists are chosen for their interest and involvement in the types of art form/discipline submitted. Proposal review criteria – assessment is based on artistic qualifications of the artist, quality of the proposal as it relates to the goals and objectives, interaction of the artist with the membership at 9Muses, project budget feasibility, and evidence of planning and ability of the artist to implement the proposal.
Residency Length: Visiting Artists-in-Residence at 9Muses are selected to participate for a one to three month term. A pre-planning session 30 days before the start of each residency is recommended.
